Audition Requirements for Performance Majors

Prospective students wishing to major in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in PERFORMANCE: ACTING & MUSICAL THEATRE must audition for the School of Theatre, Television, and Film. Students who wish to apply to SDSU with a general emphasis are not required to audition.

Please note that prospective Performance students first need to apply to SDSU during the October/November application period.

If you are denied admission based on your performance audition, you cannot apply to SDSU again until the following academic year.

Please bring a headshot and resume to the audition.
Students may audition with either package #1 or package #2:

Audition package #1

Two contrasting monologues

  • One monologue should be contemporary realism and the other a classical or heightened language piece.
  • Introduce both monologues at the beginning of your audition.
  • Total audition time: 3 minutes.

Audition package #2

One monologue, and a verse and chorus, or short portion of a song

  • Please choose one monologue that best features your abilities.
  • Song selections should be from the musical theatre repertoire.
  • Students auditioning on campus must bring sheet music in the correct key to be played by our staff accompanist. We do not allow a cappella singing or taped accompaniment.
  • Total audition time: 3 minutes.

On-campus auditions:

Friday, February 3rd from 2:00 - 6:00 PM, and Saturday, February 4th from 10:00 - 4:00 PM.

If you cannot audition for us in person, we are able to view your audition online.
Please film yourself performing audition package #1 or package #2 and post the video to YouTube or Vimeo. Put your first and last names in the subject line and submit the link to your audition video by February 3rd.

Total video length must not exceed 3 minutes.

We do not accept late submissions.
