Bio

Andrew Young is the Scene Shop Foreman, Manager, Lead Rigger, and Safety Coordinator for the TTF. He is a veteran of the entertainment industry with experience in a variety of technical roles and a comprehensive production background.

Beginning his career at The Juilliard School, training on Broadway and off-Broadway productions, he continued to expand his expertise working for some of the top arts organizations and venues across the country. A few of his notable shows include world premieres of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Aida, The Pearl Fishers, and Almost Famous; Tony Award-winning productions of Seven Guitars, 700 Sundays, Jersey Boys, The Full Monty, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; as well as large scale concerts such as Muse, Justin Bieber, Guns and Roses, and many others.

In addition to the SDSU TTF, Andrew served as a Lecturer and Technical Director at the Yale School of Drama, and Technical Director at The University of California at San Diego, and Boston University, The La Jolla Playhouse, The Diversionary Theatre, and The Playwrights Project, among other roles at nationally recognized theatres and venues. His publications include articles on “Carbon Fiber Composites in Platform Construction” and “ETCP Rigging Certification in an Educational Setting”. He continues to feed his interests in fabrication innovation and performing arts safety.

Andrew holds an MFA in Technical Design and Production from Boston University, and a BA in History and Theatre from Catawba College. He is a Journeyman with the IASTE Local #122, and an Arena and Theatre ETCP Certified Rigger. He is a member of the USITT Technical Production, Safety, and Portfolio Review Commissions. He is an Advisory Member on the University of California Regents Health and Safety for the Arts Standards Development Advisory Group; and a member of the ESTA Rigging, Stage Mechanics, and Event Safety Standards Working Groups, developing ANSI standards for the entertainment industry.
